animal Flower cave

One of the most stunning sights in Barbados is the Animal Flower Cave, located under the cliffs at the northern tip of the island. The main opening of the cave offers an iconic view. Typically, this scene is seen in silhouette due to the cave's dark interior, but in 2001, I developed a digital technique that allowed me to capture this high-contrast environment by layering multiple exposures. Through this process, both the sea outside and the cave's interior are properly exposed, revealing the beauty of the location.

The name "Animal Flower Cave" is derived from the sea anemones, locally known as animal flowers, which inhabit the pools within the cave. It is a must-see destination, with cliffs to hike and explore, as well as a restaurant and gift shops for visitors. If you're lucky, you may even spot a whale swimming by, adding to the magic of this unique place.

little bay

On the northeastern coast of Barbados is a secluded and captivating “little bay” known for its rugged cliffs, rock formations, spectacular blowholes, and natural sea pools. Dan took this panoramic shot at low tide. Still the calming sounds of waves crashing against cliffs and splashing waves surged through the blow holes. Between December and April, whales can sometimes be spotted offshore as they migrate to warm waters. It is a must experience attraction in Saint Lucy. On a clear day from the cliff top, you can view miles of the impressive Northeastern coastline.

Pico Teneriffe

“In 1990 I went on my very first expedition up the east coast of Barbados, my father-in-law showing me the sites. He took me to here, a large flat plateau covered in coconut trees jutting out into the Atlantic ocean, accented by sheer chalky white cliffs. I took some of my very first photos of Barbados landscape from that point. It was on that day. We had a camera malfunction. Seemed the film was not advancing. My father-in-law had a brilliant idea. He took the camera and squeezed his 6 ' 4” frame into the trunk of his car and asked me to slam it shut . This gave him the opportunity to open the camera and fix the film so that we can continue expedition.”

Over the years, Dan and I have visited Pico Teneriffe many times to photograph and watch the sun rise.

COUNTRY ROADS

This endearing and bumpy country road spans both Saint Andrew and Saint Peter parishes, close to the Morgan Lewis Windmill and Cherry Tree Hill. There is a fascinating spot on the hill where the laws of gravity seem to be defied, creating an intriguing optical illusion. When we park your car in neutral at the right spot, it appears to roll uphill against gravity, leaving our visitors baffled and delighted. There are only a few of these sites that exist in the world.

The windmill & the sleeping giant

Before the introduction of large scale steam powered sugarcane factories, the island was covered with windmills like this one. These mills were used to crush sugarcane, which was then processed into sugar. Built mostly from coral stone and rubble, many were constructed using mortar made from egg whites and coral dust. Renovated in 1999, the Historic Morgan Lewis Windmill is the largest and only complete sugar windmill remaining in the Caribbean. In the distance is a prominent rock formation resembling a sleeping giant.

walkers beach & it’s long pond

1.3 miles long with pinkish golden sands, refreshing winds and powerful Atlantic waves. I would not recommend swimming here as it is has a dangerous current. We take our family including pups, to run and play on the many sand dunes. A few have fished in Long Pond’s fresh water.

chalky mount beach

“When I first moved to Barbados, I lived at my in-laws house on the East Coast. I'd spend a lot of time swimming in that ocean right there with my family. There are many beautiful rock formations up in the hills of Chalky Mount. Apparently an art director of a nude magazine thought so too. One day while I was driving by, I noticed a naked woman leaning against a curvy sandstone outcrop. I don’t know if this is legal in Barbados. There was a photographer and art director shooting stills of the young woman. I also noticed a security guy lurking around, keeping his eye on me as I drove slowly past the scene!”

east coast view From chalky mount

The jagged high hilltops of Saint Andrew. “I thoroughly enjoy climbing and hiking. Occasionally I would take the opportunity to lug my tripod, mounted Nikon D300, complete with a fish eye lens to all sorts of locations. Climbing high into the hills of the chalky Mount region, I was able to capture many panoramic images. In this photo I am overlooking the East Coast, from Walkers Beach, Saint Andrew on the left, all the way over to Martins Bay, Saint John on the right. If you can find this location on your hike, look for an old tyre swing hanging from a tree. A good place for a rest.” Dan

CATTLEWASH BEACH

Cattlewash holds cherished memories from my youth, as my parents’ beach house sat right on its shores. Each summer, friends filled nearby beach houses as we enjoyed two months of endless fun. After a long day sun bathing and body surfing in the rolling waves, we spent the evening playing cards and board games, never once turning on a TV.

Long ago, farmers brought cattle to wade in the ocean, giving this vibrant east coast beach its fitting name.

Joes river & the Atlantic OceaN

A beautiful day on the east coast.

"It might appear as if I were looking out from a cave, but I’m actually tucked up under one of the large rock formations scattered along the coast. You can see one like it off in the distance. These rocks have been constantly battered by waves for centuries. You can see the evidence in the erosion in the lower half. This cluster sits at the mouth of one of one the island's few running fresh water rivers known as Joes River.” Dan

Named after a prominent plantation owner in 1653, Joseph Thorne.

rocky beach

Just south of Jose River, this rare rocky beach lies in sharp contrast to the island’s sandy shores. This challenging beach invites exploration rather than swimming or sunbathing. Perfect for family outings, it holds fond memories for the youngsters in our family as they scampered over stones, marveled at hermit crabs, and chased tiny fish through the many small sea pools.

BIG ROCK, Bathsheba

Barbados has its fair share of white sandy beaches. But over on the East Coast in Saint Joseph you will see coarse, pinkish golden sands, jagged rocks and boulders like this one. This rock is right near the famous Soup Bowl.

“At low tide I hiked out and took the shot. I was interested in the contrast of the one large boulder surrounded by hundreds of little stones visible beneath the crystal clear water” Dan.

Bathsheba Beach is believed to be named after Bathsheba, the wife of King David in the Bible. She bathed in milk to keep her skin smooth and soft. The mineral-rich white foaming waters here were thought to have similar beautifying and healing effects.

Bathsheba reef

Another gorgeous view capturing the Bathsheba reef. When the photograph is enlarged, you can see surfers enjoying the waves.

As little girl, my brother would take me here to catch tiny fish in the reef pools. I had a small scooping net and beach bucket. At that time, we lived in a beach house nearby. We would keep the fish in the salt water aquarium my dad built. The next day we would set them free back into the reef.

early 1900’s bath house in bathsheba

My beloved grandmother, born in the early 1900s, shared stories of her youth swimming in this bay. She recalls using this very bathhouse as a women's changing room.

Fast forward to 1996. This same bathhouse was painted pink and used as a prop in the production of a soap opera called The Bold and The Beautiful. In this show, the character Brooke Forrester used the small house as a temporary refuge, when she left her California home and fled to Barbados due a mental breakdown as a result of losing her baby. Dan and I were chosen as extras in the production. As we awaited the start of shooting, Dan looked out from a second floor room were the actors were getting makeup done. From an upstairs balcony, Dan caught the eye of fans below who seemed very excited to see him. They waved and giggled. Confused at their exuberance, he waved back at them. A few minutes later as he walked down over to the set, he saw the three young girls smiling with excitement. As he got a little closer, he saw thier faces turn quickly to disappointment. Turns out, from far away, Dan resembled the actor Ron Moss who played the character Ridge Forrester! We had a good laugh.

BATHSHEBA & IT’S soup bowl

The Soup Bowl in Saint Joseph amazes with dramatic scenery, fresh salt air breezes and crashing waves, creating an unforgettable laid-back vibe. Renowned as a top-tier surfing spot, it hosts international competitions and draws praise from 11-time world champion Kelly Slater as a "top three wave location" globally. During events, the beach overflows with excited crowds. This area was named in the 1960s for its curling waves resembling a “bowl” and frothy white water as the “soup”. Scientists note that this coastal gem boasts some of the Caribbean’s most consistent waves.

TENT bay FISHING village

Tent Bay is a quaint fishing village in Saint Joseph on the east coast.

We love buying fresh flying fish and Dolphin/mahi-mahi from the local fishermen. Savouring these Barbadian delicacies alongside fried breadfruit and cou-cou. With a local chef’s guidance, Dan mastered crispy breadfruit chips - delicious!

Named for the makeshift tents that once sheltered vibrant boats and gear, Tent Bay thrives on fishing. Watching fishermen skillfully navigate waves and reefs, departing at dawn and returning with their catch by sunset, is a captivating glimpse into island life.

staircase to the sea

On south coast, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, smaller waves lap against white sands of the nearby Enterprise Beach. A few hundred yards away, large cliffs crop up where the beach ends and continue quite a long distance around the southern coastline. One day, strolling along these cliffs, Dan discovered striking steps carved directly into the coral stone descending to the sea. Not much is known of the origin of this feature. It seems possible that it may have been a diving spot here at one time, long in the past.

They would yelp and jump for joy in anticipation on the ride down. On the way back home, not peep! An effective and entertaining way to drain their little dog energy.

independence square

In the heart of Bridgetown lies Independence Square. A tranquil public space with stunning views of the iconic Parliament Buildings. A prominent 9-foot statue of Errol Walton Barrow, Barbados’ first Prime Minister, looks over the park. Each visit recalls an embarassing childhood moment in my dad’s office. One day, he’d stepped out to handle an urgent situation, leaving me, to answer an expected call. When the phone rang, it was Prime Minister Barrow himself! Stunned, I blurted out that my dad was unavailable due to an... emergent meeting! I inadvertently combined "emergency" and “urgent”. Embarrassed I told my dad when he returned. He lovingly chuckled.

Stroud bay

Nestled in the rugged NW corner of Saint Lucy, Stroud Bay is not your typical beach destination. Exploring its dramatic cliffs and rocky terrain feels both thrilling and intimidating. We were captivated as powerful blowholes erupted before us and vast sea caves echoed below.

This bay holds a rich history. Once a vital Arawak settlement, it served as a key stopover for early Amerindian travelers en route to North America.
